#6 Curt Schreffler

Curt “getting it done” on a cinder track

Curt was my teammate at Kiski Area High School, in fact he was the one who talked me into going out for cross country. Curt talked to me during our sophomore year and trained with me during the summer to get me ready for the season. We ended up being #3 and #4 on the team our junior season.

For our senior year, we were named captains of the cross country team. However; the teachers went on strike, (our coach, Chuck Hauser was a teacher) so Curt and I had to coach the team through preseason workouts and the first couple weeks of the school year. The Assistant Superintendent, George Vagionis, was assigned to be our coach (basically our school district appointed chaperone). He showed up for the bus to the away meet in a light blue, three piece suit and walked with our team on this mountainous 3.1 mile course before the meet. We won the meet 15-45, Dr. Vagionis retired with an undefeated 1-0 record.

After cross country season, Curt talked me into running a marathon. So, with three solid weeks of training, we thought we were ready. Curt and his dad, Andy, picked me up at 3:30am (in a snow storm) for the two and a half hour drive to State College, PA for the Nittany Valley Track Club Marathon! Curt remembered a few things that I guess I blocked out; at the start of the race, it was 36 degrees, we went through 10 miles in 68:10 and the course was hilly.

After our senior year, Curt went to Carnegie-Mellon University and earned his degree in Civil Engineering. He did not run for CMU.

Curt recently ran the Pittsburgh Half Marathon in 2018. And in his words, “I might have finished in the top ten in my age group.”

I owe Curt a huge thank you for getting me involved in the sport of running, being my first training partner and teaching me everything he knew about the sport.

Curt lives in Frederick, MD, where he enjoys cycling and craft beers.
