Welcome to N of 1.

This website will be a forum for several running topics, both serious and humorous. There will the ability for the readers to make comments and is encouraged. We will have guest writers occasionally sharing their knowledge and experience.

I am a 55 year old guy who still has the mentality of a 25 year old, however, the years and miles now limit my ability to train and race as hard as I would like. I have recently moved to Hilton Head, SC after the first 54+ years in Pittsburgh.

A brief synopsis of my running (I’m sure there will be many more details will be unveiled in future writing).

My running/coaching career started in 1979, when I ran my first 10K. 48 minutes.

In the fall of 1981, as a high school junior, at Kiski Area, I was talked into running Cross Country. In my first meet, I ended up being 4th man on the varsity team.

After my senior year of high school cross country, I was convinced to run a marathon. In December, on a snowy Saturday in State College, PA, after averaging 35 miles per week, I ran 2:59:08 as a 17 year old.

The fall of ’83, my college career began at Robert Morris College (with a huge improvement because of a high mileage summer). Four years later, I was asked to be a graduate assistant.

After a year, I was in the right place at the right time, and was offered a head coaching position at Duquesne University, which I held for eight years.

In January of 2017, after raising my children, I made a concerted effort to rededicate myself to my running career. But this time as a marathoner/ultra marathoner.

During my years of running and coaching, there have been several people who have had an influence on me and my career(s). To “kick off” this website, for the next 10 days, I will highlight the people that had the biggest impact on me as a runner and/or a coach.
